Noctis Lucis Caelum is the crown prince of the nation of Lucis, a continent-spanning country structured around a magical crystal, granted to them by the gods of their world. Rebellious and daunted by the prospect of becoming king, Noctis is considered by many to be a wayward prince and a poor candidate for the throne.

When Noctis' father, King Regis, is violently murdered during the signing of a peace treaty, Lucis is conquered by the technologically advanced empire of Niflheim, and Noctis is reported as being dead. Thus begins a journey to form a covenant with the gods, topple Niflheim, and restore Noctis to his throne.

But there are murmurings that Niflheim is meddling in dark and ancient forces, and the nights are growing longer ...

Lucis is nominally a modern day nation that resembles both the American Deep South, Cuba, Italy, and Japan, although it does diverge from its inspirations in a few key ways, such as being an absolute monarchy whose royal family are noted worshippers of their universe's Death, the Glacian, to the point where a winged skull is the nation's symbol. It has more or less modern technology, however, and more or less modern attitudes to most things.

Noctis is about twenty years old and stands about 5'9", with dark hair and blue eyes (or brilliantly red, when channeling his power as a King of Light), and a somewhat a-ethnic appearance with features of Japanese, Hispanic, and Italian people. He'll almost always be dressed in black, a regnal colour in Lucis. He's noted in canon as having a regal bearing, holding himself with a certain amount of authority and grace.

For those with senses that can detect such things, Noctis reads as almost grotesquely magically powerful -- the Kings of Light serve as one of the only sources of magic in the world of Eos, and even when weakened with age, his father was able to magically shield a city and simultaneously serve as a magical battery for hundreds of people, non-stop for almost thirty years.
